Who is Allowed to Clean up Blood?

There are currently no laws or regulations preventing you from cleaning a minor accident involving blood at your home. However, the prevailing guideline is anything bigger than a dinner plate should be remediated by a professional crime scene/biohazard cleanup company.

If the injury happens on commercial property, the rules change dramatically. OSHA has stringent guidelines about what an employer must provide to employees who respond to biohazards. Those guidelines include proper equipment, annual training, Hepatitis B vaccinations, PPE's and such. Liabilities abound when employers put their colleagues in situations they are not qualified and equipped for or are unfamiliar with.

Of course, there are other reasons to outsource the cleanup. Studies have shown there is often additional psychological distress and undue burden placed on those who clean up the site of suicide or trauma within the family. It's vital to consider the emotional impact a biohazard cleanup might have on those involved.

Tackling Crime Scene Cleanup

The cleanup of violent trauma may not be limited to just bodily fluids and blood. Damages to the property are typical and often caused by the activities of law enforcement. Fingerprint dusting, broken glass or doors, and tear gas are sometimes left behind.

Most people don't realize that any crime scene can be hazardous. Dozens of pathogens and diseases can be transmitted through blood and bodily fluids during the crime scene cleanup process. The risks remain present even after the body is removed, sometimes for days and weeks. That is why OSHA guidelines for Blood Borne Pathogens need to be followed.

Quickly mopping up the affected areas spreads the potentially infectious pathogens around. It is essential to apply the correct EPA registered hospital-grade disinfecting solutions. Steri-Clean technicians are trained to properly remediate biohazard waste, more importantly, to find and sanitize where the fluids might travel over time. We use various safe cleaning agents and personal protective gear to stop bloodborne pathogens.

Steri-Clean is registered and insured as a medical waste generator. Therefore, ensure all contaminated or hazardous waste materials are contained in medical waste bins and legally transported to a licensed medical waste disposal company.

The California Law Regulating Trauma Scene Clean Up

In 1998, the California Congress passed the Trauma Scene Waste Act. This law states that only companies licensed by the State of California can legally clean trauma scenes. The law further states that regular cleaning companies, including janitors, maintenance workers or employees cannot clean such scenes. In summary, this law defines how the scenes are to be cleaned as well as how trauma scene waste is handled and disposed of.
